    Presentation Title: “Elucidating the S. aureus Recalcitrance Mechanisms Promoting Medical Device-associated Infections”

    Dr. Walker is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at UTHealth Houston’s McGovern Medical School. Dr. Walker joined the department in 2019 after completing her postdoctoral training with Drs. Scott Hultgren and Michael Caparon at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO.

    Dr. Walker received her Ph.D. from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Iowa after completing her doctoral thesis work.

    Dr. Walker is a recipient of the Texas Rising STAR award (2019).

  • Assistant Professor, Director of E. L. Reed Herbarium

    Presentation Title: “A CURE for Inequitable Access to Undergraduate Research”

    Dr. Matt Johnson has been a professor and director of the E.L. Reed Herbarium in the Department of Biological Sciences at Texas Tech since 2017. His laboratory studies the origin and maintenance of biodiversity in plants using genomics and phylogenetics methods. As an instructor he has developed several course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) for non-majors and majors using natural history collections. As a member of the Biological Collections in Ecology and Evolution Network (BCEENET), he has ongoing education research projects to assess the impact of expanding access to CUREs on student self-efficacy and data science skills.
